Wychwood Baptist Church

Baptism

*** OUR MOST RECENT BAPTISM WAS ON 11TH JUNE ***

At Wychwood Baptist Church we perform something called 'believers baptism.'  This is where someone who has professed faith in Jesus, is fully immersed in water as a symbol of what has happened in their life.

Matthew 3 record how John the Baptist came preaching repentance and baptism.

'Confessing their sings they were baptised by him in the Jordan river.' (Matthew 3v8).

It's an act of obedient discipleship, commanded by Jesus, and performed in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  It's part of the great commission God gives at the end of Matthew's gospel.

'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,  baptising them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.' (Matthew 28v18-20).

It's part of Peter's appeal at Pentecost.

'Repent and be baptised every one of you.' (Acts 2v38)

Throughout the book of Acts we see it as a direct response to repentance and faith in Jesus.  For example, the Ethiopian Eunach (Acts 8), and Cornelius the centurion (Acts 10).

We think of baptism as an 'outward expression of an inner reality.'

It's a picture of what has happened in a person's life.

Of repentance, with going into the water reflecting the 'death' or our old selves and being raised to new life.

This also reflects the union a believer has with Jeus in His death, burial and resurrection.

Finally, with the water we have this image of 'cleansing' - reflecting how our sins are washed clean through Jesus.

A recent baptism

Below is a video of a recent baptism, held at the church on 29th June 2014, involving Andy & Vikki Field.

On a light hearted note, watch out for a mishap and Alan's response.

We also had a cat which was keen to be part of our service!
